Life in the Past Lane

Story of a Classic Film Buff

I LOVE Classic Films

I have been watching classic films since I was young.  There has been an influence on my tastes, likes, dislikes, etc.  This site shares my love of films and music from these glory days in Hollywood.

Also, there are links on this site to additional information.

I am afraid I may have been born in the wrong era.  But as time passes, I am not alone.  Sure enough in the 80's and 90's it was not quite as popular, but now there is a growing movement of vintage inspired clothing, CDs of Swing Music, and DVDs of such classics as The Thin Man series.

This is my guide to Life in the Past Lane.

Favorite Genres

The first genre I like is called Film Noir.  It originated in the early 1940s.  Film noir reached it's hay day in the 1950s.  My favorite pieces are I Wake up Screaming, Murder My Sweet, Maltese Falcon, Mask of Dimitrios, Laura, just to name a few

The screwball comedy is another favorite.  This was especially appreciated in difficult times, such as the depression and the war years.  Sometimes the day was serious enough, and there was a need for laughter and glee.  The production of these films, for the most part, began in the 1930s.  Among my favorites are: It Happened One Night, My Man Godfrey, You Can't Take it With You, Bachelor Mother, The Lady Eve, Ball of Fire, His Girl Friday, The Awful Truth, To Be or Not to Be, Arsenic and Old Lace, just to name a few.

Hitchcock, in my opinion, is unto himself as separate category.  I remember counting the days until the rerelease of Rear Window.  It is one of my favorite Hitchcock classics.  But among the my other favorites are: Rebecca, North by Northwest, 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, Shadow of a Doubt, Notorious, To Catch a Thief, The Trouble with Harry, Vertigo, Dial M for Murder, and Saboteur.  Checkout TCM for any playing this month!
